Yamba Guide
Calm waters at Whiting Beach.

Whiting Beach

Nestled in behind Turners on Hickey Island is Whiting Beach. This unassuming little beach is a bit of a haven thanks to the Turners break. The calmer waters make this an ideal spot for the little ones, as well as stand-up paddle boarders and swimmers.

Turners Beach Yamba
Waves peeling along the rocks at Turners Beach.

Turners Beach

Considered to be a bit of a “swell magnet”, Turners Beach is known for great surf conditions minus the crowds. You can also take a stroll along the break wall, or climb the rocky cliffs at the base of Clarence Head.

Long Term Stay Yamba
The ocean pool at Main Beach.

Main Beach

Right outside our front door, Main Beach is easily accessibly and has great surf conditions for beginners. The ocean pool offers shelter from the waves, the old surf club is a beauty, and you can keep caffeinated at the beach side cafe. In the evenings you can also catch the sunset over the beach from The Pacific Hotel which has one of the best views in town.

Gorgeous Pandanus trees at Convent Beach.

Convent Beach

Just a stones throw to the south of Main Beach, Convent Beach is so named for the nunnery that once overlooked it. It’s accessible from Main Beach via the rock shelves to the right of the ocean pool, or there’s a short path from Clarence St. Convent is a nice secluded beach with gentle waves, frequent dolphin activity, and exotic Pandanus trees on all sides.

Tropical paradise at Pippi Beach!

Pippi Beach

Finally, we head a little further south from Convent Beach the picturesque Pippi Beach. This is what Australian beaches are all about… wide open spaces, great surfing, and silky white sand as far as the eye can see! Pippi Beach is also home to the dolphin park so you’re likely to bump into a few.

Top 10 Things To See In Yamba

Top 10 Things To Do In Yamba

Yamba has been voted the best small town in Australia for a number of years now and for good reason. Here are the top 10 things to see in Yamba!

The ocean pool at Yamba Main Beach.

Ocean Pool at Main Beach

There are few better ways to start the day than to watch the sun rise over the ocean and have a refreshing dip. Located right on Main Beach the ocean pool provides safety from the elements so is a perfect spot for the little ones. While you’re there you’ll probably see some locals out for their 9 am ocean swim. They’re friendly and if you’re not careful you’ll be joining them!

Clarence River Lighthouse. You can’t miss it!

Clarence River Lighthouse

An unmissable Yamba icon, the Clarence River Lighthouse (or Yamba Lighthouse) was originally erected in 1866 atop Pilot hill. The current lighthouse was rebuilt in 1955 and is still active today. There’s a neat replica of the original lighthouse in the surrounding park, as well as a couple of lookouts with gorgeous views over Turners and Main beach. A picturesque spot to catch the sunrise or sunset!

Views on all sides along the Turners break wall.

The Turner’s Cliffs and Breakwall

If you follow the signs to Turners Beach from the lighthouse you’ll end up at a rugged natural amphitheatre. Climb the volcanic rock formations, watch the waves crash against the cliffs and feel the ocean refreshing ocean spray! Heading back the way you came and across the beach you can walk all the way out along the break wall. You can watch the boats drift in and out of the Clarence river estuary on one side, and watch the locals surfing on the other.

Farmers and Producers Markets

After a stroll along the break wall you’ve definitely earned a treat…better visit the Farmers and Producers Market! You’ll see a lovely spread of local organic produce, sushi, craft spirits, flowers, coffee, sweets (try the cinnamon rolls!) and hand made knick-knacks. Perfect for a morning bite and a little souvenir shopping. The markets are held every Wednesday from 7-11am at the Whiting Beach carpark.

Classic Aussie pub vibes are through the roof here!

The Pacific Hotel

You would’ve seen this on your way to the lighthouse. The Pacific Hotel is a truly iconic pub boasting perhaps the best views from any pub in Australia! Enjoy panoramic views over main beach paired with a refreshing ale and top notch pub food.

The Dolphin Park at Pippi Beach

Take a leisurely 5 minute stroll from main beach and you’ll find yourself at beautiful Pippi Beach. There are literally kilometres of silky white sand, plenty of beach breaks, and most importantly it is a hot spot for dolphins! Early morning and late afternoon are usually your best bet to catch the show.

Our crew enjoying the sunshine along the Angourie Walking Track.

Yuraygir Coastal Track

The gorgeous Yuraygir National park has many treasures and one way to take them all in is by walking the Yuraygir Coastal Track. Spanning 65km of stunning coastline, there are various access points to the trail so you can either brave it all or enjoy smaller sections. The Angourie Walking track is a perfect day trip – a 10km out and back section starting from Angourie Point.

The Blue and Green Pools at Angourie

What better way to cool off after walking the Angourie Walking track than a dip in crystal clear freshwater swimming holes? The Blue and Green Pools at Angourie are local favourites, with plenty of cliffs to jump off and beautiful views of Spooky’s Beach.

Whale Watching!

This is an absolute no brainer. Whether you’re watching from the beach, the pub, or up close on a boat tour you’re in for a treat. Every year from late May through October the whales feed and migrate along the coast en-route to their northern breeding grounds. It is common to see them breaching just off the beaches around Yamba – seriously a sight to see!

Surfing

If you’re a surfer or are aspiring to become a surfer then Yamba has you covered. Turners Beach, Main Beach, and Pippi Beach are all reliable breaks within walking distance from Yamba Surf Lodge. And if you venture south to the Angourie Surfing Reserve you can surf one of Australias best point breaks (Angourie Point), as well as Angourie Back Beach and Spooky’s beach. Head North and you can access Iluka and Bluff Beaches. Absolutely spoilt for choice!

So that wraps up our top 10 things to see in Yamba. Now it’s time to come and see it all for yourself! Yamba Surf Lodge has a plenty of room options including a self contained apartment, ensuite rooms, and rooms with shared facilities. Check out the link below to book now.

Beautiful Yuraygir National Park

Beautiful Yuraygir National Park

Yamba is an amazing place and the surrounding areas follow suit offering plenty of day trips during your stay. One such place is the beautiful Yuraygir National Park located just 5kms from Yamba. The park is home to Angourie Surfing Reserve with its stunning views and one of Australias best point breaks. After watching (or joining) the locals surfing you can take the family on a short walk along the Angourie Walking Track.

Our crew enjoying the sunshine along the Angourie Walking Track.

Part of the 65km Yuraygir Coastal Walk, the Angourie Walking Track is a 10km round trip that takes you out to the Shelley Head campground and back. Estimated completion times are between 3.5 and 4.5 hours, but you can easily shorten the walk to suit you best. Along the way you will enjoy pristine empty beaches, rugged coastal bushland, and panoramic vistas. Yuraygir and the Clarence Valley are truly quintessential Australia…wide open spaces, beautiful beaches, and gorgeous wildlife!

Yuraygir National Park is home to all the a-list native fauna – kangaroos, emus, koalas, reptiles, and plenty of colourful bird life. If you keep your eyes peeled you may even see whales and dolphins feeding along the beaches.

The bushfires sadly damaged many areas of the trail.

If you’re planning on coming to Yuraygir National Park make sure you visit the pay station at the carpark as visitor fees do apply. This is crucial as many of the facilities in the park were destroyed in the bushfires earlier this year. You’ll see evidence of the burns as you walk the track with a few detours early on and the stark contrast of new growth against charred trees.

There are plenty of other areas in the beautiful Yuraygir National Park worth visiting. Visit their official website below for current updates and further information.

Whale Watching In Yamba

Whale Watching In Yamba

Here in Yamba we are treated to one of mother nature’s finest spectacles. Each year from late May through October we are lucky enough to witness the whale migration as they travel North. Whales travel vast distances from their Antarctic feeding grounds to tropical mating grounds. Luckily we are in the perfect spot to take it all in, so visit us for some whale watching in Yamba!

Already we have had a number of sightings from Main beach, Pippi Beach, and Angourie point. The most common culprits are Humpback and Southern Right Whales, as well as our local Dolphins.  Having said that there have been reported sightings of False Killer Whales and Minke Whales too!

Best viewing times are early morning or late afternoon to avoid glare, which leaves plenty of time to check out the town or catch some waves. If you decide you would like to take a closer look there is a local whale watching tour operator as well.

Clarence River Yamba Save it!

This area of Northern NSW and the Clarence River is “Gods Country”. My Dad always used to say that to me when I was a kid, I knew it was beautiful but never really knew what it meant. But I do now and it is well worth protecting from mining giants.
